CRITIC'S PICK:

Away With The Tides: Calida Rawles, Spelman College Museum of Fine Art — The historic neighborhood of Overtown, just northwest of downtown Miami, was known during the Jim Crow era as “Colored Town.” The area has gone through myriad upheavals since Miami’s incorporation in 1896, and is the setting for Calida Rawles’ new exhibition at Spelman. The artist, who received a B.A. from the college in 1998, describes these works as a tribute to the people who endured Overtown’s persistent turmoil. The cultural and commercial brilliance of the once-vibrant Black neighborhood was steadily eroded through gentrification and mass displacement, according to Rawles. “I seek to honor those who suffered these losses and ensure that their experiences, our shared history, are neither forgotten nor washed away. ‘Away with the Tides’ stands as a testament to remembrance, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the communities that shaped us.” — Kevin C. Madigan
